Barry Siegel, Director of Literary Journalism Program at UCI, to speak about “The Power of Storytelling” at Newport Beach Central Library
WHO: Barry Siegel, a former Pulitzer-Prize-winning national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times and director of the Literary Journalism Program at UC Irvine. Siegel’s lectures are known for their humor and insight.
WHAT: Manuscripts Literary Event sponsored by the Newport Beach Library Foundation. In his talk “The Power of Storytelling”, Siegel will discuss the power of literary journalism. Stephen Crane, George Orwell, John Hersey, Lillian Ross, Joseph Mitchell, Gay Talese, John McPhee, Joan Didion, Tom Wolfe, Tracy Kidder, Calvin Trillin, Hunter Thompson, Truman Capote, Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer – who will comprise the next generation of master literary journalists?
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Siegel continues to write for The Los Angeles Times as a special correspondent, and is the author of five books, including three novels set in imaginary Chumash County on the central coast of California.

33rd Newport Boat Show to Honor USS Missouri Veterans from Southern California
WHAT: The Newport Boat Show, the largest and oldest in-water boat show in the Western U.S., will honor surviving veterans of the USS Missouri living in Southern California in a special ceremony on opening day of the 33rd Newport Boat Show. The USS Missouri, the last battleship ever built in the U.S., is one of the most famous and most decorated U.S. Navy ships. USS Missouri saw action in the Pacific in World War II (Iwo Jima, Okinawa) and was the site of the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. USS Missouri also fought in the Korean War and, after being recommissioned in the 1980s, participated in the Gulf War in 1991. The USS Missouri is now a museum ship at Pearl Harbor.
