33rd Newport Boat Show to Honor USS Missouri Veterans from Southern California
WHAT: The Newport Boat Show, the largest and oldest in-water boat show in the Western U.S., will honor surviving veterans of the USS Missouri living in Southern California in a special ceremony on opening day of the 33rd Newport Boat Show. The USS Missouri, the last battleship ever built in the U.S., is one of the most famous and most decorated U.S. Navy ships. USS Missouri saw action in the Pacific in World War II (Iwo Jima, Okinawa) and was the site of the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. USS Missouri also fought in the Korean War and, after being recommissioned in the 1980s, participated in the Gulf War in 1991. The USS Missouri is now a museum ship at Pearl Harbor.

TIME: 11 am WHERE: The ceremony will take place aboard the vessel Zembra III, a 95-foot, $4.1 Million trawler displayed by Fraser Yachts at the Newport Boat Show, Lido Marina Village, 3424 Via Oporto, Newport Beach, California (Corner of Lido Way and Newport Blvd., one block south of Pacific Coast Hwy.)

NEWPORT SHOW Over 300 vessels, including multi-million dollar luxury yachts will be displayed in the water at the 33rd annual Newport Boat Show, May 3-7. Many new 2006 models from top American and foreign builders will make their West Coast / American debut. HOURS: Wednesday, May 3: Noon to 7 pm; Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 4-6, 10 am to 7 pm; Sunday, May 7, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
ADMISSION: $12 for adults; Children 12 and under, Free.
HOW TO GET THERE Take 405 Fwy to 55 Fwy South until it turns into Newport Blvd. Continue south 3-4 miles to Via Lido, turn left then left again to the parking structure. Also, there will be free parking and continuous shuttle service from Newport Tech Center at 500 Superior Avenue south of 15th Street in Newport.

WHO: Barry Siegel, a former Pulitzer-Prize-winning national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times and director of the Literary Journalism Program at UC Irvine. Siegel’s lectures are known for their humor and insight.
WHAT: Manuscripts Literary Event sponsored by the Newport Beach Library Foundation. In his talk “The Power of Storytelling”, Siegel will discuss the power of literary journalism. Stephen Crane, George Orwell, John Hersey, Lillian Ross, Joseph Mitchell, Gay Talese, John McPhee, Joan Didion, Tom Wolfe, Tracy Kidder, Calvin Trillin, Hunter Thompson, Truman Capote, Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer – who will comprise the next generation of master literary journalists?
