Unusual for this area, the huge,and shy, 100+foot blue whales have also been sighted recently, about 8 miles offshore. The world’s largest international yacht race will begin its 59th run on Friday, April 28, 2006 at 12:00 noon (PDT) in Newport Beach, California and finish with an awards ceremony on Sunday, April 30 in Ensenada, Mexico.

With over 450 boats expected to participate and Lexus continuing for a second year as title sponsor, the 2006 Lexus Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race promises to be another premier event for spectators and racers.

The 2006 race theme—“The Tradition Sails On”—captures the essence of this annual Southern California sailing event and will be carried out in a painting by Los Angeles’ KTLA news anchor Carlos Amezcua. His painting and other race memorabilia will be on exhibit at the Nautical Museum of Newport Beach beginning in March 2006.

Before the horn sounds, race boats will be inspected by NOSA volunteers to ensure that the boats meet the requirements of the Fleets (PHRF and ORCA) in which they race. Pre-Race Seminars are being scheduled now and dates/locations will be published soon on the NOSA website at www.nosa.org

Between April 20th and April 30th, the 2006 Newport Beach Film Festival will showcase more than 350 films from around the world, offering an ambitious and international selection of features, shorts, documentaries and animation that will compete for both Jury and Audience awards.

Since its beginnings, the Festival has presented many acclaimed films, including Crash, Spellbound, Dogtown and Z Boys, Joint Security Area, and Castle in the Sky, as well as anniversary screenings of classics such as The French Connection, Sunset Boulevard, 50th anniversary of Jim Henson Company and The Outsiders. As a result, the Newport Beach Film Festival has quickly gained recognition both from filmmakers and audiences, and is expected to attract more than 30,000 cinephiles in 2006.

In addition, the Newport Beach Film Festival offers a rare opportunity to meet the filmmakers. Directors, screenwriters and cinematographers eager to share their work will provide an exclusive inside look at the industry during post-screening Q&A's.

Set in beautiful Newport Beach, a few blocks away from spectacular coastline and less than an hour from Hollywood, the Festival will host several premieres, galas and yacht parties for a singular festival experience. Films will be shown throughout the city that boasts one of the largest movie consumer groups in the world, a rich filmmaking history as well as fine dining, shopping, and exceptional recreational activities.

This year’s annual golf wine dinner at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar will be a bi-continental adventure.  Scheduled for Friday, April 28, 2006 at 6:30  PM,  the American vs. European Wine Dinner features New and Old World cuisine paired with wines of distinction from both continents (menu follows).  In the spirit of the long-standing golf competition between the United States of America and the European Union that is held in even-numbered years, wine dinner guests will be invited to vote for their favorite wine served. 

The American vs. European Wine Dinner represents the kind of informative, entertaining events that is at the heart of Fleming’s passion for wine.   The cost for the dinner is $60 per person, including wines, exclusive of tax and tip (menu is on page 3).   Seating is limited, reservations are suggested.
