Biennial exhibits are by their nature an indication of the state of contemporary art, a two-year gauge of what has developed and changed. The exibit promises to be particularly engaging since the artists selected make up a culturally diverse group and are also highly varied in their choice styles, content and mediums. To prepare for the exhibition, the curators conducted a large number of studio visits, during which they made decisions about the artists and their work. In making their selections, they focused on the most vibrant ideas found among a new generation of visual artists working throughout the state. It is sure to be a fascinating exhibit. American families will be the guests of honor at the Newport Dunes Resort's Fourth of July festivities. Southland residents are invited to visit the 100-acre waterfront resort located in Newport Beach and participate in a wide array of family activities that will include live music, carnival games, crafts, face painting and drawings by a caricaturist. Additional events will include hula-hoop and limbo contests and volleyball and horshoe tournaments as well as appearances by Uncle Sam and resort mascot Moe B. Dunes. In addition, guests may visit the award-winning Back Bay Cafe' for hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, chili and the Dunes' famous Back Bay seafood chowder. Private beachfront cabanas are available where families may enjoy barbecues or other private gatherings. In keeping with tradition and to maintain a family atmosphere, alcohol consumption on the bech is prohibited. Guests may enjoy a host of recreational activities such as water aerobics, ecological tours and sailing lessons. Rentals of windsurfers, kayaks, Rollerblades, pedal boats, boogie boards, bicycles, 18-foot electric boats and 14-foot fishing boats also are available. For those who opt for rest and relaxation, however, visitors may enjoy unfettered access to the resort's private beaches and Olympic size swimming pool that are supervised by lifeguards for maximum safety.
