Maria Fernanda Cardoso: Cardoso Flea Circus
Colombian-born artist Maria Fernanda Cardoso has created a whimsical installation inspired by the novelty of flea circuses. The Cardoso Flea Circus includes the elaborate stage setting of a big-top tent equipped with miniature props such as cannons, netting, tightropes, and tall diving platforms above thimbles of water. Accompanying this installation is a video of the artist dressed in circus attire leading her fleas through a series of daring tricks. The remarkable acrobatic efforts of the fleas include dancing, tightrope walking, high dives, and weight lifting. On view in the installation Gallery of the main museum in Newport Beach.

Nathan Oliveira
Like the solitary yet resolute figures in his paintings, Bay Area artist Nathan Oliveira has kept to his vision through changing art world fashions over the last forty years. This first major retrospective presents a body of work celebrated for its rich psychological insights, painterly finesse, and unabashed spirituality. Organized by the San Jose Museum of Art and guest-curated by noted art historian and curator Peter Selz, the exhibition includes 60 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Major Art/Minor Artists
This exhibition of art by elementary-school students has been a yearly tradition since 1992, when the museum established a partnership with the Santa Ana Unified School District. Students from Santa Ana’s “Special Studio” program work on a variety of projects in diverse media, from oil pastels to clay to photography. The culmination of their yearlong efforts is the opportunity to see their work on public display. On view in the museum’s satellite gallery in South Coast Plaza.

Summer Session
SCR’s nationally renowned Professional Conservatory is limited to a select enrollment of students 18 or older who must qualify through audition. The eight-week summer program puts the finishing touches on training for careers in theatre, film and television. Coursework includes In-Depth Acting, Audition Techniques, Characterization, Shakespeare and Voice. The faculty of professional actors and teachers is led by Karen Hensel, winner of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, with seminars by guests renowned in their fields.

Summer Session
Students 18 and over choose their own programs, to suit individual pace and interests, from a selection of courses beginning with Fundamentals of Acting: Basic Skills for newcomers or those interested in self-improvement all the way to Actors Workshop for career-minded students. Most sessions include classes in Improvisation, Playwriting, Acting for the Camera and Musical Theatre. Classes meet weekly in the new Education Department wing of the Folino Theatre Center.
