| SUMMER PATRIOTIC SALUTE ENTERS ITS 3RD YEAR |
June 12, 2004
The 3rd Annual Summer Salute to Patriotism will continue this summer in Balboa on Saturday, June 12th at sunset. This event features a traditional American flag lowering ceremony, including lowering of the State of California and Newport Beach city flags. The ritual dates back to the 18th century when the Royal Navy began it to mark the end of the work day.
The Orange County Sheriffs Harbor Patrol fireboat will participate with a water display salute. U.S. Coast Guardsmen from the U.S.S.Narwhal Coast Guard Cutter will lower the American flag and end with the traditional triangular fold as “Taps” is played.
The flag ceremony will continue every Saturday evening at sunset throughout the summer. Other groups wishing to participate may contact Penny Rodheim at (714) 557-5100 Ext. 12.
The public is invited to view this free, patriotic event held at the flag pole adjacent to the Auto Ferry Landing on Balboa Peninsula, next to Balboa Boat Rentals.

The exhibition will include 40 works, including three classic local yachts (CURLEW, TICONDEROGA and SEA DRIFT) from the Museum's own "Famous Yachts of Newport" collection. The additional images have been assembled from collections throughout the state to create this landmark exhibition.
