"The Shape of Things" Now Showing at the Laguna Playhouse
May 28, 2002 - June 30, 2002

www.lagunaplayhouse.com/new_season
The Laguna Playhouse is proud to produce the West Coast Premiere of The Shape of Things by Neil LaBute, the talented young writer and director who is best known for his play Bash: Latter Day Plays, and for his films In the Company of Men (NY Critics's Circle Award for Best First Feature and Sundance Film Festival Filmmakers' Trophy), Your Friends and Neighbors and Nurse Betty. The New Yorker called LaBute "an original voice... the best new playwright to emerge in the past decade". The Shape of Things is about four college students, centering on the ever-changing relationship between an audacious art major and the shy young man who falls in love with her. His transformations and the lengths to which he goes to retain her affections drive this provocative play to its surprise ending. The Shape of Things also boldly questions the aesthetic yardsticks of today insisting that we consider morality a defining characterstic of art. Biennial exhibits are by their nature an indication of the state of contemporary art, a two-year gauge of what has developed and changed. The exibit promises to be particularly engaging since the artists selected make up a culturally diverse group and are also highly varied in their choice styles, content and mediums. To prepare for the exhibition, the curators conducted a large number of studio visits, during which they made decisions about the artists and their work. In making their selections, they focused on the most vibrant ideas found among a new generation of visual artists working throughout the state. It is sure to be a fascinating exhibit.
