Orange County Museum of Art presents Beautiful Losers
February 6, 2005 - May 8, 2005

Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture is a first of its kind exhibition of art and design celebrating the extraordinary creative production and cultural influence of youth cultures. Skateboarding, graffiti, and punk have not only affected fashion, music, literature, and film, they have inspired a generation of young artists who identify with the iconoclastic lifestyle and counter-culture stance of these creative forces born from the street. In addition to including works in all media by more than 50 artists, Beautiful Losers includes music, album covers, skateboards, and “zines” that reveal the spirit and vitality of street culture and its expanding influence.
The unifying traits of these young artists, whose styles and distribution channels still remain largely outside of the art world, include an interest in pop culture iconography, a sense of the absurd, and a strong do-it-yourself attitude. Beautiful Losers traces the early influences on this new generation of artists, filmmakers, and designers, and explores the broader cultural trends that inform their work.

WEST COAST’S LARGEST IN-WATER BOAT SHOW “SETS SAIL” TO NEWPORT DUNES RESORT
April 27, 2005 - May 1, 2005

Ahoy matey! The West Coast’s largest in-water boat show is setting sail for Newport Dunes Resort in Newport Beach where the public will be able to explore more than $200 million worth of the finest luxury yachts, motorboats and marine accessories available. Sponsored by the Southern California Marine Association (SCMA), “SCMA’s 2005 Boat Show at the Dunes in Newport Beach” will be held from Wednesday, April 27 through Sunday, May 1. The special event will feature hundreds of yachts, sportfishers, sailboats, speedboats and boating accessories, a number of which will be making their debut at the highly anticipated event. (This show is not affiliated with, or sponsored by, Duncan Mcintosh Company, Inc.’s 2005 Newport Boat Show at Lido Marina Village.)
In addition to the hundreds of crafts in the water, two giant tents (totaling 34,000 square feet in size) will be situated shore-side that will house scores of smaller-scale watercraft as well as a variety of marine accessory equipment exhibits and experts who will answer questions and demonstrate the latest products. Also on tap at the festivities will be gourmet food served up by the Dunes’ award-winning Back Bay Café, a number of family-oriented activities and live musical entertainment including appearances by the Jennifer York Trio on Saturday and Sunday. Hours for “SCMA’s 2005 Boat Show at the Dunes in Newport Beach” are as follows: Wednesday, April 27 and Thursday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, April 29 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. While admission will be $10 per person, children ages 12 and under are free. “This year’s event is sure to be our finest ever as the Southern California Marine Association has pulled out all the stops to create a lavish week of water craft expositions, marine accessories displays, live entertainment and great food,” said Andrew Theodorou, general manager of Newport Dunes
Resort. “‘SCMA’s 2005 Boat Show at the Dunes in Newport Beach’ will offer something for everyone, from smaller fishing crafts to larger vessels that cost millions of dollars.” Newport Dunes Resort is a 100-acre waterfront resort featuring a 406-site state-of-the-art RV park, 450-slip marina and a private waveless beach and playground that has been enjoyed by families since 1958. New to the Dunes is the addition of 24 mobile cottages, 400-square-foot self-contained units that feature soaring ceilings, spacious bedrooms, full-service kitchens and private baths. In addition to such planned activities as water aerobics, ecological tours and sailing lessons, the Dunes offers rentals of kayaks, windsurfers, pedal boats, boogie boards, inline skates, scooters, bicycles, 18-foot electric boats and 14-foot fishing boats.
Also on the premises is a waterfront restaurant, the Back Bay Café, which overlooks a six-lane boat launch. The resort also offers professional catering and event planning services for festive beach parties and for special events from 50 to 5000 guests.
