Newport Beach Film Festival

The 2002 Festival ran April 11-19 and attracted nearly 20,000 film devotees from around Southern California and beyond. More than 170 features, shorts, documentaries, and animated films competed for dozens of Jury Awards and Audience Awards. In addition to film screenings, the Festival hosted several premiere galas, yacht parties, and question and answer sessions with filmmakers.

Blending the best of classic and contemporary filmmaking, the Festival is a showcase of award-winning independent films from around the world. International entries, including selections from the Philippines, China, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan, and South and Central America created a unique mix of genre and medium.

Over the Festival’s nine-day run, participants are treated to several U.S. and world premieres, Academy Award-nominated short films, a gala opening night and closing night event, and an in-depth seminar series exploring the world of filmmaking through the eyes of recognized film industry players. The seminar series coveres topics such as screenwriting, directing, and film music composition. Among the featured presenters last year were screenwriters Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down), David Franzoni (Gladiator), and Roger Schulman (Shrek), Oscar-winning production designer Henry Bumstead (To Kill a Mockingbird), and director Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back).

The Glory of Easter at the Crystal Cathedral

The largest and most spectacular passion play is brought to life through exciting drama, song and pageantry.A cast of over 100 volunteer actors are supported by professionals playing the lead roles of Jesus, Pilate, Mary Magdalene, Herod, Mary and more. Together they recreate the story of passion week including the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Jesus cleansing the temple, the Last Supper, the trial, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. Utilizing the latest in special effects, the Easter pageant is famous for its lifelike recreation of earthquakes, thunder storms and lightening inside the all-glass building. Flying angels soar overhead while live animals parade down the aisles. The passion play is an exciting interpretation of the week that changed the course of history forever.
