The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum will present "Hooke The Lure and Lore of Sportfishing", a comprehensive exhibition focusing on the unique history of salt-water fishing and it's origins in Southern California Coastal waters. Antique fishing gear, vintage photographs, paintings and memorabilia will deal with the evolution of sportfishing from the early years when ocean anglers such as Charles Frederick Holder and Zane Grey helped establish salt-water fishing as a sport, through the Golden Years when anglers discovered new fishing grounds and developed, through trial and error increasingly sophisticated techniques and tackle catching and landing the "big ones".
The exhibit runs through February 29, 2004 in the museum's Grand Salon Gallery. Hours are 10-5 Tuesday through Sunday.

Woman: A Celebration
Photographs from the Collection of Peter Fetterman
Dozens of immortal photographers – Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Julia Margaret Cameron, and Ruth Orkin among them – have shaped our image of women through unforgettable photographs that have become part of the public consciousness. This exhibition of more than 100 photographs ranges from a rare image of a grinning Greta Garbo to a silent moment shared between a mother and her infant; from jazz singer Sarah Vaughn to an anonymous 19th-century Chinese woman. Woman: A Celebration illuminates the many moods of its subject in a breadth of photographic styles. On view in the Pick/Laudati Galleries of the main museum in Newport Beach.

Girls’ Night Out
Girls’ Night Out presents groundbreaking photography and video by a new generation of woman artists from around the world who explore a more fluid and poetic approach to female identity. Classical genres such as portraiture (especially involving the passage from girlhood to adulthood), architectural subjects, and landscape inform their work. The results are evocative images of female strength, beauty, and individuality. Although influenced by the legacy of feminism and postmodernism, the conceptual and aesthetic stance of these artist reflects their distinct generational and cultural viewpoints. The international roster of artists in Girls’ Night Out includes Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Elina Brotherus, Dorit Cypis, Rineke Dijkstra, Katy Grannan, Sarah Jones, Kelly Nipper, Daniela Rossell, Shirana Shahbazi, and Salla Tykka. On view in the Beall Galleries of the main museum in Newport Beach.
